このプロジェクトは、科研費基盤研究（A）「古代地中海世界における知の伝達の諸形態」（2015-2018）を基盤としています。そこでは、地中海をとりまく各地で継起した古代社会において、それぞれの個性的な文化の創造と継承、そして相互交流において果たしたメディアの役割をめぐって、哲学、歴史学、考古学、エジプト学、美術史学の研究者が、海外から招聘した研究者とともに共同研究を行いました。2017年5月には、一橋大学で行われた日本西洋史学会第67回大会において、小シンポジウム「古代地中海世界における知の伝達の諸形態」を開催し、周藤芳幸による司会のもと、佐藤昇、師尾晶子、芳賀京子が、それぞれ「口頭による知の伝達」、「碑文からみた知の伝達」、「イメージという知の伝達」について報告し、金山弥平、山花京子、田中創がコメントしました。さらに、2018年9月には、このテーマによる国際研究集会を名古屋大学で開催し、国内からは長田年弘、金山弥平、川本悠紀子、桜井万里子、佐藤昇、周藤芳幸、高橋亮介、田中創、中野智章、芳賀京子、藤井崇、師尾晶子が、また国外からはJudith Barringer (Edinburgh), Josine Blok (Utrecht), Gregory Kantor (Oxford), Lilian Karali (Athens), Barbara Kowalzig (New York), J. E. Lendon (Virginia), Andronike Makres (Athens), Irad Malkin (Tel Aviv), Elizabeth A. Meyer (Virginia), Marion Meyer (Vienna), Catherine Morgan (Oxford), P. J. Rhodes (Durham), K. Vlassopoulos (Crete)が参加しました。この国際研究集会の成果は、Y. Suto (ed.), Transmission and Organization of Knowledge in the Ancient Mediterranean World, Wien 2021として公刊されています。

This project, which was conducted with the support of JSPS KAKENHI Grant Number JP15H01888 from 2015 to 2018, aimed at elucidating the nature and role of various media which created a relatively stable and uniform culture in the ancient Mediterranean societies. Although many factors must have contributed to this remarkable phenomenon, the efficient transmission and organization of knowledge must have been significant for keeping these societies vital and resilient. Therefore, at the fourth Euro-Japanese colloquium on the ancient Mediterranean world held in September 2018 at Nagoya University, twelve Japanese and thirteen foreign scholars working on the ancient Greek and Roman world met and discussed the tools and ways of transmitting knowledge. The results have been published in Y. Suto (ed.), Transmission and Organization of Knowledge in the Ancient Mediterranean World, Phoibos Verlag: Wien.
